The Island • part II

The Madeira Island
Another stop of the trip was a picturesque view point with the amazing scenery of the east coast.

Afterwards, we made our way to the traditional Madeira village, full of houses like the one in the photo on the right.

Dziś serwuję Wam drugą porcję zdjęć z naszej objazdowej wycieczki po Maderze. Miłego oglądania! ♥

Today I'm uploading a second load of photos from our Madeira roundtrip. Enjoy! ♥

Niestety, Marta się później zmęczyła i zaczęła odmawiać współpracy. Choć ja do dziś tłumaczę to złym samopoczuciem spowodowanym stałym przemieszczaniem się pomiędzy
0 m.n.p.m a aż 1800 m.n.p.m.
Unfortunately, Marta got a bit tired later and denied to cooperate. However I still like to call it my body's intolerance for the extreme height differences.

In the comments to the last post, Monika said that the photos remind her of Iceland. I need to admit, that when I took this photo, I had the exact same thoughts.

Yet another, and this time the last stop on our trip - easternmost point of the Island.

And here we both agreed that 'It does look a lot like Ireland!'...

The Island • part I

The Madeira Island
In our third day of stay in Madeira, visibility was amazing and that's why we got to see the nearby island. Ilhas Desertas are uninhabited islands situated about 20 kms away from the coast of Madeira.

Pierwszym przystankiem wycieczki była fabryka wyrobów wiklinowych.
The first stop of our trip was the Wicker Works Factory.

I know that this blog has been quiet for a little too long and I do apologise; things have been crazy lately! I'll tell you all about it in the upcoming posts, but for now enjoy another story about Madeira.
On the third day of our visit to Madeira, we decided to take the easy way. We figured that there is no point in trying to get around island using public buses. It would take us ages and we wouldn't see even half of the things we had a chance of seeing by buying the organized trip.
While exploring Funchal, we saw a little shop advertising trips around the island. We stopped by, out of pure curiosity and after a little conversation with an extremely friendly seller, we found out that the trips are organized by the local company and show the highlights of Madeira. We decided that the price is attractive and the route interesting enoguh for us to buy the tickets. That's how, with a little help from outside, we got a chance of seeing how versatile the Island is.
As a tourism student, I like to proudly think that while travelling, I do it with the least harm for the place that I'm visiting. However, this is a topic wide enough for a separate post. Either way, because of my attempts to be a 'sustainable' tourist, I've always deeply despised all sorts of organized trips. I've figured that they destroy the local economy and environment. This time, we hardly hurt the local economy and the only thing that truly pains me inside is the fact that we weren't eco-friendly travellers. But this always is the hardest part of every trip.

Afterwards, we made our way to the highest peak of the Island - lying at 1810m Pico de Arieiro.

The weather favoured us that day and upon arrival to the top of the mountain we were above the clouds.

The next stop of the trip was a fishing village, located in the central part of Madeira, with a rainforest climate.

After exploring the village, we found a short moment to warm up in front of the fireplace and snack on something. Later we carried on with our trip, but I'll tell you more about it in the next post - stay tuned!

Ponta do Sol

Ponta do Sol
Dzień zaczęliśmy od porannego spaceru do centrum Funchal, skąd złapaliśmy autobus do Ponta do Sol.
We started our day with a morning walk to the centre of Funchal, where we caught the bus to Ponta do Sol.

We decided to get away from Funchal on the second day of our stay in Madeira. Unfortunately, upon the arrival to the island we made a mistake when we decided not to rent a car. That's why we had to rely on public transport in the following days of our stay. Luckily we found a perfect solution to that 'problem' on, what we thought was, our final day in Madeira.
Madeira itself is not a big island and it's easy to drive around it all within two hours. However, public buses to the neighbouring cities leave once an hour, that's why it can be a bit of a problem to plan a trip around the island with the help of the public transport. Mainly because of that reason, on our second day, we decided to limit ourselves to seeing just the neighbouring town - Ponta do Sol.
Out of the high tourism season there are barely any visitors stopping by the town and while we were exploring the area I couldn't resist the feeling that we were one of the few people who stopped by Ponta do Sol that day. This was a nice escape from an overpacked Funchal.

Ponta do Sol
After getting to the town, we climbed one of the hills, from where we enjoyed this view. And on our way to Ponta do Sol we could see for ourselves how friendly the locals are.

Ponta do Sol

Ponta do Sol
While on the bus, we were trying to figure out, if the first town that the bus stopped in was already our stop. One of the passengers who was getting off the bus explained to us for how long the bus will need to go until it gets to Ponta do Sol. When we got to, what we figured, was already our stop the elderly man sitting in front of us made sure that we are getting off and proudly confirmed that this is already our stop. Despite the fact that we didn't speak the same language it wasn't a problem for us to communicate - all we really needed was some good will and a bit of patience.
Unfortunately, I couldn't get rid of the feeling that this situation couldn't happen in Poland.
Everybody would sit quietly, consumed with their own thoughts and wouldn't be bothered by two tourists who didn't know where their stop was.

On our way back home we found out that the bus we took, will take a round way and stop by most of the villages on that side of the island. That way, completely accidentally, we got amazing views for just 2 euros. And I decided that bus drivers in Funchal are my idols.
