Music of the Week - Miike Snow

A couple of days ago I figured that I'm in a mood for a bit different kind of music than I normally tend to go for. And I got pretty horrified after looking at my music library and realizing that it focuses around pretty much the same genres. So long story short - all those events led me to finding "Miike Snow".
Their (not-so) debut album was released in 2009. Miike Snow is a band of 3 members, 2 of them are Swedish music producers, that are responsible for music of such singers as Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears and various others.
It all sounds exciting right? And it all indicates that having great experience and knowledge simplifies the task of coming up with new ideas. And that the band would actually give us something excitingly different. But it didn't happen. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the CD was a disaster. Bits are really high-end, the vocals are impressively good, and the melodic lines are pleasant for every ear. But in the music they produced we can clearly hear Madonna (electro sounds and bits in "Sylvia", "A Horse is Not a Home"?) or Britney ("Plastic Jungle"?). And I'm afraid that as long Miike Snow is great to listen to while in need of something easy on the ear or while putting together a play list for the party, this is all that we can get from this CD.
Very pleasant but not breathtaking.

Music of the Week - Portugal. The Man

In the Mountain In the Cloud.

U Portugal.

A więc udanego weekendu!

Last time the country, this time Portugal as well, but musically. Simply to kick the weekend off nicely and go back to the musical roots of the blog.

I remember that the first time when I stumbled upon their CD was accidental and I did it while researching Portugal. I started listening to their CD and this way here I am, together with the band when they premiere their new (for me it's third, for them seventh) CD - In the Mountain In the Cloud.

When you google Portugal. The Man you can find out that their music is Psychedelic Rock. However I like calling their musical style progressive rock much more. Maybe the theory about their psychedelicness was based upon countless number of mixed sounds of a closer unknown origin. But I need to admit to be the one who enjoys those unrecognisable sounds. Pleasant, deep and warm guitar tones are not to be missed on that CD as well. And the sounds of stringed instruments and pianos, in connection with high vocal of the singer are icing on this musical cake.
However, I'm afraid that there is no one who could be flawless and don't jump into some pattern. The case of Portugal. The Man is that when you turn on a CD, you can't really say which one is it. Because unfortunately, as long as all of them are very nice in reception, they aren't much different. But maybe I should see it as an advantage? Maybe it's better to have it nice and same instead of having it different and unbearable?

Have a lovely weekend folks!

Music of the Week

Moimi faworytami płyty są "In the Hospital", "Paris", "Strobe" i "Lovesick".

I haven't had an opportunity to listen to a new CD that I would like that much as this one for a long time. Well, ok maybe it's not new because it was released in 2008, but I didn't get a chance to hear it earlier. And the CD that I'm talking about is "Friendly Fires" by the band with the same name. And why am I not surprised by the fact that the gentlemen are British?
I turned on this LP because of the recent and quite widely advertised premiere of band's latest CD "Pala". I wanted to give it a first listen having in my head what the band did on their previous long play. And I think that they set the level quite high.

There is a mixture of everything on "Friendly Fires" so in other words something I like most. My favourites are "In the Hospital", "Paris", "Strobe" and "Lovesick". The last song seemed to me to be extremely annoying at first, probably because of the very boys band alike sound of the vocalists' voice. But after a while I realized that it's a thing that makes the song interesting.

For me, the weakest pieces of the CD are "Photobooth" and "Ex Lover". I think that if they were put separately, with a couple of songs of break between them they would be bearable. Unfortunately illusively similar and sleepy bit striking the rhythm of the song at some point becomes unbearable. Those songs reminded me of Timbaland (and this definitely isn't a praise) with his weird rhythms that somehow were able to win hearts of millions of listeners. Despite that, various electronic sounds that are served to us throughout both songs somehow manage to save both pieces from a complete failure.

I would also love You, to share your opinions with me, or just write a comment and leave a sign that you stopped by:) Because I look at the number of visits every once in a while and I can see that you are there, however it's really weird to write almost into the space and never hear back!

Music of the Week

Mieszanka electro dźwięków, gitar i perkusji w połączeniu z oryginalnym głosem wokalisty i ciekawie napisanymi piosenkami daje świetny efekt przyjemnej w odbiorze, ale jednocześnie niebanalnej płyty.

For this week I chose "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" by French band... Phoenix;) the CD was released in spring 2009, that's why it'll probably always remind me of this season and the time when I was preparing for the driving license exam. I love listening to this CD when I'm walking somewhere because it's perfectly dynamic and "sprignly" positive.
I really enjoy listening to the music where except for the characteristic for rock music guitars I can hear a bit more. And this is one of those CDs. A mixture of electro sounds, guitars and drums together with a genuine voice of the vocalist and interestingly written songs. All together gives a great result of the CD that is offbeat and pleasant to listen to. However not all of the songs are a success, it requires a lot of patience and few deep breaths to get through some of them ("Fences", "Countdown"). But there are also those, that (at least for me) save the whole CD ("Lisztomania", "1901", "Love Like A Sunset", "Armistice"). To say shortly it's a great CD for the time of the year when you can finally take off the winter clothes, put on sunglasses and listen to it while taking a walk.

The Weekend's Distraction

Under this post name I'll try to add other CD every week and in few words try to describe why that's the one I decided to write about. I think I'll start from those that are on top of the list of my favourite LPs. But sometimes this might just be something that I liked that week.

Kliknij w zdjęcie okładki, żeby odsłuchać płyty:)
Click the cover to listen to the CD:)

Dużo tu cięższych brzmień, imponujących gitar no i oczywiście nieodłączna obecność pianina.

Ja wolę tłumaczyć to sobie jako eksperymentowanie i szukanie czegoś nowego, czym można by zadowolić fanów.

For starters I chose something I like to go back to - no matter from the time of the day or year - Muse "Origin of Symmetry". According to my iTunes library this CD was played most often. And it definitely was the reason why I started to adore the band.

You can hear here how cleverly band starts mixing different styles, what with time was the ability they developed and what later became their hallmark. The CD is rich in heavier sounds, impressive guitars and inseparable presence of the piano. Here and there some electro sounds can be spotted. Every song leaves us different impression. And that is something I really appreciate - the CD helps to awaken feelings. And besides that it doesn't fall in the typical "second CD syndrome". Mostly after first LP's success bands try so hard to release something good (or just don't care any more) that I'm always frightened of what I'm about to hear. Luckily this doesn't apply to Muse. Well, at least not with their second CD.

I've got an impression that any other piece they released wasn't that good any more. Is it just an accident or an intentional experimenting with their style - that's something we won't know. I'd rather tell myself that it's experimenting and searching for new things they could amaze their fans with. But I'm a bit scared that it may be the fault of the fame that came to them together with this LP (the late "second CD syndrome"?). The desire of finding bigger audience which unfortunately is connected with commercialism. Obviously this doesn't mean that Muse's music became commercial - however they are not the same they used to be before "Origin of Symmetry". But on the other hand it's all about changes, isn't it?
