Scratch the Map: Portugal

Recently I found this post with the pictures of a Scratch Map on one of the blogs. And that was when I thought that summer time might be a good time to write about those countries that will definitely be scratched off on my map in the future...
Shhhhh... I know it's a bit idealistic but that's where I'm gonna pause for a second and let us make a short brake to think about it and figure that dreams DO become true.

I'm going to kick off from Portugal. The country that many people don't have many thoughts about. And it's difficult to be surprised about that. After all it's said to be the end of Europe, and it somehow is cut off from the rest of the continent. I am fascinated by this country for over 5 years now and even though I haven't yet had a chance to visit I will definitely do it one day. For the time being the possibility of going there and spending my whole trip in a mass tourism resort doesn't really seem appealing to me. So I'd rather wait a while longer and organise a trip by myself. A little bit less mass tourism alike. For example like this...

LISBON - the capital city. It's historic district Alfama is full of old, narrow streets. While visiting the city everyone needs to make sure to visit one of the countless restaurants with live fado music. Locals even say that if somebody visited Lisbon and hasn't heard fado it's almost like he hasn't been in that city at all.

COIMBRA is located in the northern part of the country. It's said to be students' city because it's home for the university that was opened in 1290 in Lisbon. 18 years later it was moved to Coimbra. The city is also a place where you can spot loads of azulejos - ceramic tiles painted by hands.

PORTO, which is further north from Coimbra. That's where the wine known in the whole Europe is produced. And it's also the place where the countries' history began.

MADERA, wyspa na Atlantyku i kolejne, niezliczone wąskie uliczki. I kolejne miejsce, które warto by kiedyś odwiedzić.
MADEIRA, an island at the Atlantic Ocean and even more narrow streets. And another place that would be a nice spot for the visit.

  4. I have been to Portugal before, but I went to a tourist resort and did not really enjoy myself. I think you are definitly doing the right thing by saving up and organising your own trip there. I am sure Portugal has a lot to offer behind the "Brits abroard" tourist areas!!

You have a wonderful blog! I will definitly return to read more of your posts and I wish you all the luck in the world with it!

    All the best,
    Voe.
