Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution Day

The Food Revolution Day was supposed to be a big celebration of food and at the same time a next step to revolutionizing cooking habits (or a complete lack of them) that Jamie Oliver started few years ago. The street, which is an address for Fifteen - one of Jamie's London restaurant - was filled with food stalls owned by private sellers of organic and sustainably made produce. You could try almost everything, starting from meat, through pizza made on the location, guacamole and desserts. There were chef's cooking in front of the cameras and everything was streamed live to Jamie's 'Food Revolution' YouTube channel.
Sounds like an event with a flourish? Yes, there's no doubt that it was one. Every aspect of this food revolution was perfected to the smallest detail but despite it all I still left that place with mixed feelings, why?
My first visit to Jamie's Italian was quite a while ago and somehow it left an impression bad enough for me not to want to go back there. The food was obvious and simple, served in a very pretty way (which I think is a major reason for which so many people fall for it so easily) and well overpriced. The same thing happened with a Food Revolution Day - the cooks would plant the ideas of recipes for obvious dishes, that I can easily cook without a recipe and know them without hearing it from a cook. The foods that were available for trying weren't overly impressive and the only thing that I truly loved about the whole event was an idea behind it - encouraging people to cooking at home, using healthy products. An added bonus was a fact that the entire thing was served in an extremely pretty and photogenic way, making you feel like the street was for one day transformed into a photo set for one of those amazing food magazines with impressive pictures inside.

Not that long ago, my Brother was celebrating his 18th birthday. That's when I, wanting to contribute to the party and maybe being a little bit egoistic as well, decided to use this opportunity and bake a cheesecake. But not just a regular, boring cheesecake. It was an amazing cheesecake for all of those, who love pineapple and coconut. After the first bite, my Mum proclaimed it to be the best cheesecake she's ever had - and that's not just a common commendation when heard from such a good cook like her! So I strongly encourage everyone to baking it and recommend the cake, because the recipe is definitely worth trying out.
The original version comes from here, but you can find an English translation just below the pictures.

BASE
•340g of digestives cookies
•50g of desiccated coconut (optional - I used some for my cake)
•100g of unsalted butter

THE CHEESE MIX
•1 kg of curd cheese
•250g of mascarpone cheese
•3 tablespoons of potato starch
•1 and 1/2 glass of cooled condensed milk
•5 eggs
•2 egg yolks
•a can of sliced pinneaple
•a can of coconut milk
•25ml of coconut liqueur (optional)

TOP LAYER
•300-400g of greek yoghurt

PREPARATION
Use a cake tin with a 36cm or 38cm diameter.

•Fill the bottom of the cake tin with a baking paper

the base
•Crumble the cookies and mix the crumble with coconut (if you are using it). Melt the butter and mix it with the earlier prepared crumble. Carefully     put the mix out on the base and the sides of the cake tin and when ready, put into the fridge.
•Take the pineapple out of the can, drain and mix with a blender until it becomes a purée.

the cheese mix
•Mince the curd cheese three times until it achieves a smooth consistency. Put it into a big bowl.
   •Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C.
•Add mascarpone cheese and potato starch to the earlier minced curd cheese. Mix it all together with a mixer until it reaches a smooth consistency.     Later, mix in condensed milk (leave the remaining 1/4 of a can, we will need it later for the top layer).
•Add one egg and egg yolk at a time, all the time mixing well with the mixer until all the ingredients are well connected.
•Open the can with coconut milk and using the spoon, take all the cream from the top (about half a can). Gently, blend in the coconut cream and the     pineapple purée to the cheese mix. Add coconut liqueur, if you are using any.
•Pour out the cheese mix into the earlier prepped cake tin and put it into the oven. Bake for 15 minutes. Later, decrease the heat to 120 degrees C    and bake for 100 minutes. After that time, take the cheesecake out of the oven and pour the mix of a greek yoghurt and remaining condensed     milk on top of the cake. Bake for 15 more minutes in 120 degrees C.

Serve the cheesecake after it cools down completely.

Goodbye Valencia...

Goodbye Spain
Goodbye Spain
Goodbye SpainGoodbye Spain

This post was supposed to be a big summary of Valencia. It was supposed to be about my impressions of the city, suggestions and tips. Oh, how many things were supposed to be here! But when I was writing the previous post I felt that I'm struggling. And I'm sure you could easily tell just by looking at the photos and reading the text that was written in a 'just leave me alone and let me finish as soon as I can' style. While I was writing it, I knew that I'm not putting as much heart into it as I should and at the same time I felt that every little part of me screams that it's high time to finally close the Spain period - hopefully, once and for good. That's why today is the last post with a tag 'Spain' and all I can say about Valencia is that it is a city that's worth seeing, but if you happen to be in the area maybe it's a better idea to go to Barcelona instead.
On Saturday we were supposed to check out of our hostel in the morning and later, go and see some more sights. I convinced the girls to take a walk to the Botanical Gardens, which has so many positive reviews on tripadvisor. In my opinion, you should avoid that place because besides a couple of plants and a whole bunch of cats (that were quite an attraction for me) there's not much to see. Later, as our flight to Malaga didn't leave until 3pm, we took advantage of the free time that we had left and went to see the City Hall and a beautiful Post Office's building.

Second Day in the City

I'm slowly getting back to my life in London and I'm looking forward to when everything will become a normal, day-to-day activity. In the first days after my return I felt like a charmed by the city tourist, who is trying to soak with its' atmosphere and trying to discover all of the secrets. It's only now when I'm starting to appreciate where I have been living for two years and going away for a year has made me realize how much I used to take being here for granted.
Today, it's finally time for some new photos from our second day in Valencia. We managed to see most of the old town on that day, went to the silk exchange, a market with a whole bunch of local delicacies and tried the 'Paella Valenciana' (which turned out to be quite disappointing, maybe because of a bad choice for the place where we ate it).

I don't think there are many Spanish who are not fans of this 'delicacy'. Ladies and gentleman, I have an honour to present you - ham 'Jamón Iberico' that you can easily find in every Spanish shop.
And smell it from the doorway.

Po prawej, kreatywny sposób na wystawienie menu. Szkoda tylko tego zmarnowanego chleba.
To the right, quite a creative way of displaying the menu. Sadly, it just seems like such a waste of bread.
